About Allison Evans
I've been photographing since I picked up my mother's camera when I was 10. I began taking pictures of my pet rabbit, and the rest of my world then, and soon discovered there was a schism between what I saw and what appeared in the final photograph. The camera seemed to "see" more than my eye did, and gave the everyday world more significance and importance: first by stopping everything in that moment, and second, through the reading of the image itself.
Over time, I realized I wasn't satisfied if I wasn't creating something, be it a photograph or a collage, or something else.
I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where I explored photography throughout high school and college (Virginia Commonwealth University). After living in Boston several years, I took a 2 year program at New England School of Photography, then studied in Harvard University's Visual and Environmental Studies Department (Critical Theory of Photography, Color Theory, Alternative Photographic Processes, C++ Programming, etc.), then attended Massachusetts College of Art for my BFA in Photography. I began my MFA at Bard College, a wonderful program in the Hudson River Valley, after graduating from Mass Art.
I began photographing for a living upon returning from Bard, in 1997. I photographed several weddings and really enjoyed them. The couples loved the work, too, so I began taking that work, while continuing to make non wedding photographs, as well. Weddings allow me the intimacy of photographing the same subjects for hours. It's an honor to document such an important intimate and public ritual. I enjoy photographing a project for 1 or 2 days, or for weeks or months, as well.
I'm currently learning the art of retouching, which is an invaluable tool in the digital realm. I also photograph portraits (which includes children), corporate and educational events, and make my own art.
